Alhumdulillah for Rain

The Alhumdulillah Series

 Introducing: The Alhumdulillah Series.

We are living in a time where complaining has become a normalized way for people to vent and let off steam. This is the main way that we communicate. People can complain for hours – discussing everything they are displeased with and usually ending up feeling even more frustrated and fired up….but how much time is spent discussing things that we are actually pleased with? More often than not, we, as a society, have fortune to be grateful to our Lord for all that he has blessed us with. We often forget to say and truly ‘Alhumdulillah.’

We are not perfect and we disobey Allah SWT in more ways than one, and yet He still gives us so much. How could we be anything but grateful? We could say ‘Alhumdulillah’ a billion times and it would still not be sufficient in praising our Lord for all He has given us and continues to give us.

Recall that Allah SWT said in the Quran:

“And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” [16:18]

So let’s revive a much needed sunnah and start a positivity loop! Just as Sūrat aḍ-Ḍuḥā came to the Prophet (saws) at one of the lowest times of his life, we too can turn to Allah (swt) and focus on the good. Without further ado, our first post of the series:

Do you ever stop to say ‘Alhamdulillah” for the rain? This is a truly amazing blessing from Allah (SWT) and we are told so in the Quran: “And We have sent down blessed rain from the sky and made grow thereby gardens and grain from the harvest.” [50:9]

Known as the ‘rainy city’ Vancouverites tend to roll their eyes whenever grey clouds start to form overhead. However, how can we turn a blind eye to the many benefits that this beautiful pouring water brings?

We use water to function in many aspects of our lives and although many prefer the sunshine, it is rain that people pray for in a drought. Rain truly allows land to flourish! The beautiful trees we see, the sprawling bodies of water, the ease at which we flip a tap and fill our cups is all due to this rain and it is astonishing. Moreover, Sahl ibn Sa‘d narrated that the Prophet (SAWS) said:

“Two (du‘aa’s) are not rejected: du‘aa’ at the time of the call to prayer and du‘aa’ at the time of rain.”
[Narrated by al-Haakim in al-Mustadrak (2534); at-Tabaraani in al-Mu‘jam al-Kabeer (5756); classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami‘ (3078)]

We should try to change our perspective and try to not see rain as an annoyance, but rather see rain as the blessing it truly is. Next time you step out the door to start your day and it’s raining, instead of getting frustrated while grabbing your umbrella, recite a dua and say Alhamdulillah!
